Last eerie touches

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

We returned to the lovely Gröndal studio for a kind of short day or recording the lasr finishing touch of some eerie piano and Hammond organ.

First Johan laid down some piano parts. Then it was time for some nice Hammond organ thru a nice old Leslie amp/cab.

The mixing is more or less done as well so the plan is to master the album on Wednesday (17:th of June) at Tonteknik with Magnus Lindberg (Cult of Luna) behind the knobs.

Version Studio Day 3

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Day 3 at Version was spent recording all of the vocals for the album. And yes, there is alot more vocals than on recent Switchblade recordings and yes, Anders do all of the vocals this time around. And Anders really stepped up and delivered unearthly vocals if you ask me. So after 2 x 3 days of recording, the album is done except for some Hammond and piano stuff that will be recorded at Gröndal just prior to mixing session. No date has been set yet but it should hopefully happen sometime in the next few weeks. Until then..

Version Studio Day 2

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

All of day two at Version was spent recording guitar overdubs for all three tracks of the album. Guitars (and the rest as well) is sound huge to be honest.

Well, not that much else to report since it all about guitar right now. Since we don’t have the amazing selection of mics or pre-amps here at Version compared to Gröndal, Daniel brought his nice API pre-amp and Fat Head ribbon mic.  So one amp/cab was mic’ed with the Fat Head and a Revox 3500 and the other amp/cab was mic’ed using a Revox 3500 and a Sennheiser MD421. No expensive stuff but great sounding none the less.

Version Studio Day 1

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

After a few days of well needed rest we’re back in the studio. This time in a smaller studio called Version. The studio is a lot smaller and alot more simple but serves the purpose very well for us when doing guitar overdubs, keys, vocals etc.

We started the day pretty late with guitar overdubs on one track. Since it’s pretty damn hard to time/sync the slower parts we came up with an idea… While we recorded the basic live tracks we filmed all the takes with two cameras and that footage has now been synchronized with the audio in Pro Tools. So Johan have a monitor in the liveroom that he can look at us play the track and sync to that.

A few days off

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

Sorry for the lack of updates. The last 24 hours of our first session in Gröndal was quite hectic but it all worked out great in the end. We succeded in recording all the basic tracks for the new album this last weekend. The album will consist of 3 tracks with a total playingtime somewhere in the region of 50 minutes. In a couple of days we’ll be heading to a smaller (and alot cheaper) studio called “Version Studio” to record overdubs, vocals, hammond, rhodes and whatnot.

Day 3

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Yesterday was a long but pretty rewarding day of work. From 9 am to 2 am. Basic tracks for 2 of the 3 songs are now complete so today we’ll be trying to get the last track down on tape. (Hard drive really…)

Late night

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

For the gear nerd I can say that the studio has a great arsenal of exotic/fabulous/vintage mics, mic pres, outboard. To get your saliva glands working overtime I can inform you that mics for drums include Neumann U47FET/M149 Tube, Coles 4038, Gefell UM70, Royer R121, RCA DX77 among the usual suspects such as Sennheiser MD421, Electro-Voice RE20, etc going into Neve 1081, API 3124, Chandler TG2, Trident & Spectra Sonics mic pres.

Guitars are rocking Royer R121’s, MD421’s, etc and bass is being picked up by SM7 and MD421.

End of day 1

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

After 16 hours we all collapsed for a few hours of sleep. We managed to record another “so and so” take of one song. At the end of the night we where so tired that we could hardly hear what sounded good or not.

Day 2

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Right now we’re all trying to wake up and get going.
